LIFE SCIENCE IN FEBRUARY
Medical Mysteries
Now that scholars have delved deep into the world of cells and genetics, they are going to begin building their knowledge of how cells work together to form tissues, organs, organ systems, and entire organisms. To start, we are analyzing the muscular and skeletal systems in a novel way- through a disease model. Seventh grade scholars take on the role of doctors and receive patient history files on a daily basis. These patient history files outline the typical information found in a medical file- age, sex, medicines, hospitalization history, and overall symptoms and patient history. Each day, scholars are tasked with using the given information and their research skills to help create a diagnosis and prognosis for each patient.
Already our middle school "doctors" have helped match mixed up tissue samples to their correct patient, diagnoses an infant with a rare skull abnormality, and diagnosed an elderly patient with rheumatoid arthritis. Check below to see some of our mock patient activities!
